I only sleep on Daddy, Part Deux

December 24th, 2007

You might not believe the events that transpired last night that I am about to recount. Believe me, they are true as I am the very one who did them. You may recall my previous post in which I disclosed that I only nap on Daddy.

The past couple of days I’ve felt particularly ornery. Daddy has been forced to carry me around the house to look at all the strange objects.  Some of the time I let him get away with carrying me in the Nojo baby sling. But other times I demand upright carrying so I can give my full attention to tours of the house. By “forced to carry” I mean either they comply or I scream and cry like a dog is chewing my leg off. This is an escalation of my previous requirements of only napping on him.

Mommy is worried things are out of control. And insists that they let me cry it out occasionally when I’ve been put down to play or in my bouncer, swing, or other soothing device. Otherwise they can’t get anything done. Like packing to go to Ah-ma’s house.

Well, back to this evening. Daddy was so worn out from the past couple of days, when we visited Ah-ma’s for Christmas, Daddy went to bed really early (like 6pm!).

Late in the evening, after a good deal of fussing and no Daddy to carry me around, I finally went to nurse with Mommy for my last meal before turning in for the night. She was tired so I laid beside her in the bed for my meal.

After I had my fill and released my latch, I rolled over onto my back and laid in bed. Daddy was finally awake, and Mommy asked if my eyes were closed or if I looked sleepy. Daddy said my eyes were not closed, and I wasn’t sleepy. So Daddy played with me quietly, then we all just laid there relaxing.

Soon I was bored of this happy equilibrium, so I scootched across one side of the bed to snuggle up to Daddy’s side. They both laughed as Mommy said, “Do you think she’s trying to nurse from you, now?”

Well, I kept on scootching right up Daddy’s arm. And pretty soon with some grunting I managed to lift myself up on his arm a little bit. And I kept on grunting and scootching and made it half way up his arm with my little body actually lifted off the bed. Then Daddy said, “Do you think she’s trying to climb on my chest to sleep?”  With that he placed me on his chest.

But still I was not happy. I kept on grunting and intimating I might start howling. Then Daddy asked Mommy, “Do you think she thinks I’m her personal car, that she’s come over here to take me for a spin around the house?”

Mommy said “May be”. Daddy countered, “But that would *really* be spoiling her. To let her demand I carry her around when she should be sleeping”. Mommy agreed, but couldn’t believe I could be making such demands in such a cute way at 7-weeks old. So she wanted to see if it was true, and let Daddy pick me up and carry me on a tour of Ah-ma’s house.

Sure enough, that is what I wanted! I quit fussing immediately. It was an exciting tour, and I fell asleep in only my second pass of  the living room. Daddy returned to bed, and let me sleep on his chest for awhile before secretly putting me down (I was asleep, otherwise I would not have permitted this last act).

Daddy told Mommy people wouldn’t believe this story. Mommy said, “She really knows what she wants.”
